Valves

Any hydraulic system has at least two components, a source of fluid supplied at variable pressure and a load of some kind. The source is usually a pump in numerous disguises, such as a piston pump, a gear pump, or a hand pump, but it could be just a waterfall. The load also, can be a variety of things from a hydraulic motor or cylinder, to a paddle in a waterfall connected to a power station generator. This is fine if all you want to do is run your hydraulic motor the one way forever or have your cylinder extended out once and stay there. However, hydraulic systems need to be controlled somehow and that control is made possible with valves. Valves are what gives us mastery over hydraulics. Valves come in all sorts, shapes and sizes.

• Directional control valves • Flow control valves • Pressure control valves • Check valves There is a valve to control every single aspect of a hydraulic system. The speed and direction that a hydraulic motor turns at are controlled by a valve. A cylinder is sent in and out by a valve. Even the powerhouse generator is started and stopped with a gate valve that redirects the flow of water over the falls to bypass the paddles. The speed that all the components in a hydraulic system work at is controlled by a flow control valve either on it’s own or in conjunction with other valves. Flow control valves can also determine which components work in priority to other components. A flow priority valve gives preference to the steering and braking circuits in heavy earthmoving trucks. A hydraulic pump can usually supply a combined flow rate that is well above what some of the components in the circuit can handle. A flow control valve limits this supply to only what the component can use. At Central Queensland Hydraulics we can service, repair and supply valves for any and all applications.
